StarTeller Acknowledgements & Licenses

Last updated: November 1, 2026

See also our Terms and Conditions, Privacy Policy, and Support.

StarTeller is built on the generous work of the open-data and open-source astronomy community. This page credits the third-party data and imagery used in the app and reproduces the licenses that require it. StarTeller is not endorsed by or affiliated with any of the projects, institutions, or authors listed below.

Object catalog: OpenNGC

© Mattia Verga. Licensed under Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 International (CC BY-SA 4.0).

Deep-sky object positions and data come from a modified version of the OpenNGC database. The modified catalog is shared under the same CC BY-SA 4.0 license.

Stars: d3-celestial

© 2015 Olaf Frohn. Licensed under the BSD 3-Clause License.

The sky map's star field, star names, and designations are from the d3-celestial project, derived from the Hipparcos and Tycho catalogs and Stellarium sky cultures.

Object images: Digitized Sky Survey (DSS)

Produced at the Space Telescope Science Institute; served via the CDS/ALASKY HiPS.

Deep-sky object images are from the DSS color survey, accessed through the ALASKY database at the Centre de Données astronomiques de Strasbourg (CDS). The Digitized Sky Surveys were produced at the Space Telescope Science Institute under U.S. Government grant NAG W-2166. The images are based on photographic data obtained using the Oschin Schmidt Telescope on Palomar Mountain and the UK Schmidt Telescope.

Milky Way

The sky map's Milky Way background is StarTeller's own starless rendering, built from Gaia DR3 star counts, colored to match the ESO/S. Brunier Milky Way panorama, with hydrogen-alpha glow from the Finkbeiner full-sky Hα map. The rendering is shared under CC BY-SA 4.0.

Gaia DR3: ESA/Gaia/DPAC. Licensed under Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 IGO (CC BY-SA 3.0 IGO).

This work has made use of data from the European Space Agency (ESA) mission Gaia, processed by the Gaia Data Processing and Analysis Consortium (DPAC). Funding for the DPAC has been provided by national institutions, in particular the institutions participating in the Gaia Multilateral Agreement.

Hα map: Finkbeiner, D. P. 2003, ApJS, 146, 407.

Moon surface

NASA's Scientific Visualization Studio. Public domain.

The Moon's surface color and relief come from the CGI Moon Kit, built from Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter Camera (LROC) imagery and Lunar Orbiter Laser Altimeter (LOLA) elevation data, resized and reformatted for use in the app.

Sky atmosphere

© 2023 Fernando García Liñán. Licensed under the MIT License.

The sky map's atmosphere builds on the physical scattering model from Fernando García Liñán's spectral sky shader. Twilight, the night sky, eclipses, and the rendering pipeline around it were developed for StarTeller.
